I’ve made some slight updates to the web site. Mostly just de-crapifying stuff. I did add a new section, for my ongoing series of infrared flag photographs. I’ve mentioned these photographs here on the blog before, but if you’re interested in them, please do take a look at the tentative sequence here.

Sometime in the semi-near future I will also probably post up a short sequence of my infrared street photography as well.

For those who do not enjoy infrared, well, you’ve probably already stomped off in disgust. If not, don’t worry; I’ll likely be shooting more color this summer.

In case you hadn’t noticed, I do a collaborative blogamathing with Karl called 1/125. We post excellent photographs that we find online, we talk about photobooks we’re reading and are generally insightful, perceptive, and dashingly handsome. Or something.

We’ve got a new domain, (http://one125.net) and we’re celebrating that — and the fact that we’ve made it two months (that’s a decade in internet years) by giving away some of prints of our photographs. There’s some really good stuff there, and you don’t have to do anything onerous for a chance at it. For more info, see the announcement post.

So, if you like the photographs I’ve posted here on this blog — particularly the street stuff — please do take a look at the post, and consider following us on Tumblr or signing up as a commenter with Disqus, the comments service we use. You can also fan us on Facebook, but I feel slightly hypocritical recommending that since I haven’t opened Facebook in months…

You should also take a look at what Karl’s posted there. He’s got a couple of fantastic street scenes — the kind that present the utterly mundane in a way that is not at all mundane, but serene and mysterious. He’s also got a wonderful up-close-and-personal soccer (or football for you heathens outside the US) action shot, if that’s more your line.

My contributions are street photography, and include “Lightning,” at top, “Pull,” above, and “Limits,” below.

(Note: We might make some substitutions in the lineup, but we certainly won’t offer replacements that aren’t a step up.)

Do you hate those non-posts where bloggers blog about why they aren’t blogging? Well, then, turn back now.

I haven’t been blogging, nor have I been keeping up with my daily debriefs, or even uploading very much to flickr. I was just promoted (you can call me Captain Dayjob) at work, which is nice, and my department actually hired a bunch of people (which is also nice), but we’re all very much under the gun as a result.

I am still shooting, although lately it’s been mostly running free expired slide film through my XA. (Note, I’m not going to cross-process it like some lomo douchebag. It was kept refrigerated, and I’ll be getting it developed normally.)

But for now, in lieu of anything substantive, look at this food:

Well, I’ve replaced all the flash galleries with good old-fashioned hand-coded html, including a new section of bird images. Not necessarily good hand-coded html, but for the most part it seems to work, at least in Firefox and Coda’s webkit-based preview. If anyone sees anything that doesn’t work on their browser, or anything more mundane like a broken or inaccurate link, let me know.

There’s also a lot of best practices stuff that I simply haven’t done a great job with (like sizing of elements, for example), and that stuff is probably going to just have to wait for now. So if you have a weird size monitor, suck it up. Just kidding.

Some things that may make it on to my list of site updates for the coming year (or not):

Gear reviews

Book reviews

A new project

No promises, though. This is definitely not a new year’s resolution.

During my time off for the holidays, I’m growing some epically (is that a word) scraggly stubble, and I figured that was a sign that it was time to update my web site. I’m in the process of working on that now. I bought a copy of the excellent Coda from Panic Software. Not that I’m qualified to use it (I vaguely recall just enough about html and CSS to get myself into trouble), but it’s a very useful tool for creating and maintaining sites in a rational and bloat-free manner. (Coda being bloat-free, not necessarily my site.)

I’ve already fixed some minor problems and started putting myself on a better footing to keep the site up-to-date going forward. I’m also going to take a crack at replacing the flash galleries with plain html. This is partly a preference for not relying on the software tools I used initially to create those galleries (sad to say, it was iPhoto), partly to do with editing and updating these things, and partly an ideological bias against the increasingly commonplace overuse and abuse of flash in web design today. Not, again, that I’m qualified to wage a one-man war against flash, but I know that when I visit web pages, I always find it heartening to encounter a photograph that isn’t encapsulated in stupid a flash interface.

Disclaimer

Note that this does not indicate any claim on my part that I’m going to write standards-compliant HTML. Seriously, that’s probably not going to happen, no matter how long my stubble grows.
